Anastasia: The Musical is a sweeping, romantic adventure set in the twilight of the Russian Empire and the vibrant 1920s Paris. The story follows a young woman named Anya, an amnesiac orphan with a mysterious past, who may be the lost Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. Guided by the conman Dmitry and his partner Vlad, Anya embarks on a journey to reclaim her identity and family, all while being pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence the Romanov legacy. As she travels from Russia to Paris, Anya uncovers hidden memories, love, and her true destiny. With a compelling book by Terrence McNally, enchanting music by Stephen Flaherty, and poignant lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, the musical explores themes of resilience, hope, and the enduring power of family.

Anya/Anastasia- age: 20s-30s. Soprano or mezzo. G3-F5, belt to D5. Some dance.
If she was a flower, she would be lavender- low maintenance, drought tolerant, and aromatic. She has thrived even in the most difficult of environments. She is courageous and determined, smart and kind. She is not afraid to say what she wants, because even if it appeared to make her seem weak, she knows her heart is her strength. She exudes strength and wisdom beyond her years, partially because she has no memory of her life before the age of 17.
Dmitry- age: 20s-30s. Baritenor. A2-G4. Some dance.
If he was an animal, he’d be a snow leopard- agile, resilient, and easily concealed. He thrives independently and thinks quickly. He’s not afraid to slip by unseen, elusive, as a means to survive. He’s immensely proud of all he has accomplished for himself, regardless of how he has cheated and lied to do so. He keeps people at a distance, and has never learned to sacrifice for those he loves.
Vlad- age: 40s-50s. Baritone. A2-F4. Strong mover.
If he was a jewel, he would be amethyst- ostentatious, tough, and sharp. He treats Dmitry like family, and when Anya enters the scene, takes care of her in the same way. He tricked and schemed his way through the circles of the aristocracy prior to the revolution, with a flair for the dramatic. He’s always calculating, but easily masks it with his softness and his warmth.
Gleb- age: 20s-30s. Baritone. A2-Gb4. No dance.
If he was a metal, he would be steel- cold, tensile, incorruptible. He has had to shut down so many parts of himself to do the job he has been assigned. Loyal to the party, his duty drives him to obsession. Inspector Javert but with a modicum of conscience.
Lily- age: late 30s-40s. Mezzo. G3-C5. Strong dancer.
If she was a bird, she would be a kingfisher- colorful, swift, and territorial. She has been exiled from Russia to Paris, which leaves her with a mix of cynicism and an air of “c’est la vie.” She is clever and sultry, and her loyalty only extends to her Dowager.
Dowager Empress- age: 60s-80s. Mezzo. F3-Bb4. No dance.
If she was an element, she would be ice- frigid, distant, fragile. She has lost most people she loved, but that has not chipped her royal exterior. She is regal and seems to stand 1000 feet tall in her pride. She would like to be left alone to grieve.
Young Anastasia- age: 10-14. Soprano.
Ensemble- open for ages 18+
Strong choral singers and dancers, the ensemble becomes townsfolk, servants, soldiers, parisians, aristocrats, ballerinas.
